THE CARBINER

Gifted Ride in Club Colours

The distinctive Carbine Club Tasmania racing colours, featured for the first time on a jockey riding in the event sponsored by the Club on Schweppes Tasmanian Derby Day 2021.

Bulent Muchu rode 'Le Cadeau' in the Carbine Club Plate - a race for 3 year olds with set weights over 1100 metres, which was the second event of the twilight meeting held at the Elwick Racecourse on Friday February 5. Despite a good showing for most of the rain affected race, Muchu lost touch with the leaders over the final 200 metres, finishing in fourth place.

The Carbine Club Plate was won by 'War Correspondent' ridden by Ismail Toker, who had a real battle with second placed 'Thunberg' in the finishing stages of the event, eventually getting home by a long neck.

The winning thoroughbred was trained by Glenn Stevenson, who believed it was the gelding's best win, considering the horse was pretty fresh going into the race and had to do all the bullocking work in the run. "He's a real bulldog when it comes to a fight" Stevenson said after the race, "And when I get him home he'll be looking for his feed bin - and he won't leave an oat!"

'GeeGee Josie' was the third placed horse in the Carbine Club Plate.

Trainer of 'Le Cadeau' Leanne Gaffney and its owners, graciously agreed to a request to replace their normal racing colours with the Carbine Club Tasmania silks for the race. The 3 year old gelding was sired by 'Statue of Liberty' and its French name translates to 'The Gift', reflecting the history of the famous national monument which stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor.
