THE CARBINER

Luncheon Slam Dunk

Special Guest Speaker Scott Roth was a hit with the crowd at the Carbine Club Tasmania Sports Luncheon on Friday October 20 in the Derwent Room at Wrest Point Hotel Casino Hobart.

The coach of the Tasmania JackJumpers took a time out from his busy schedule to attend the event, entering the room immediately after conducting a training session for the local National Basketball League side. Apologising for showing up in his training shorts and top, the 2.03 metre (6 foot, 8 inches) tall American from Cleveland Ohio cut an imposing presence as he took to the stage to participate in an 'on the couch' Q&A session.

Andy 'Tubes' Taylor from Triple M Hobart took charge of the questions, which covered topics including career, family, attitude, players, supporters and sponsors. Scott Roth was appointed coach of the Tasmania JackJumpers Basketball Team in their inaugural 2021-2022 season in the NBL. Amazingly, they featured in the playoff series for the national title in their very first year, and providing inspiration to a new generation of young players and supporters alike.

Earlier in the day, Carbine Club Tasmania held its Annual General Meeting, where Steve Adermann was re-elected as President, Wendy Kennedy Vice-President, Ross Burridge Secretary, and Paul Fallon Treasurer. They were joined on the Committee by Paul Lennon, Brad Upton, Hank Petrusma and Dean Richards.

During the Presidents address at the Sports Luncheon it was revealed that during the 2022/2023 financial year, the Carbine Club Tasmania had supported more young Tasmanian sports people than ever before. The total amount of money spent on grants, sponsorships and donations was a all time record. One of the recipients was 17 year-old Nayte Ackerley who won a Gold Medal at the World Dwarf Games in Germany with the Australian Senior Men's Basketball Team. Nayte was interviewed by Carbine Club Tasmania Member Ally Bradley who had nominated him for sponsorship.
