THE CARBINER

The Man in Charge

From the moment Glen Boss took charge of the microphone, the large crowd at the 2022 Carbine Club Tasmania Derby Day luncheon was captivated. The Australian Racing Hall of Fame Jockey was the special guest speaker at the annual marquee event, and he had the audience enthralled throughout his appearance with stories from his illustrious riding career which ended when he retired in November 2021.

Glen Boss will always be remembered by racing fans as the only person to ever win three consecutive Melbourne Cups, when he rode the champion mare Makybe Diva to victory in the 'Race that Stops a Nation' in 2003, 2004 & 2005. During his 45 minute presentation, Glen spoke of growing up in Queensland, how he first got interested in racing and the long journey he has experienced since, including the horrific race fall in Macau which could have cut short his career. The crowd was particularly interested in the relationship he developed with Makybe Diva, and the dramas after the Cox Plate victory leading up to her third Melbourne Cup win. Carbine Club Committee Member Paul Lennon presented Glen Boss with a bottle of 'The Scoundrel' Remnant Tasmanian Single Malt Whisky as a thank you gift. Many Carbine Club Tasmania members and their guests took the opportunity to be photographed with Glen and the three 'jockey' Melbourne Cups he brought with him to the luncheon. See the photos here.

Prior to 'The Boss' taking the stage, Carbine Club Tasmania President Steve Adermann welcomed guests to the luncheon and spoke of the support the club has received from a long list of businesses and club members who had provided sponsorship, donations and various other forms of support which had helped the club to prosper. He made mention of the short-term financial assistance received from the Carbine Club Victoria and acknowledged the presence of that club's President Andrew Cannon AM who was invited to address the gathering. Mr. Cannon encouraged Carbine Club Tasmania members to consider attending a very special day his club was planning for Friday April 1, when a fund-raising golf day & luncheon is being held at the exclusive Cathedral Lodge & Golf Club. The Greg Norman designed, 18-hole private course is one of the most picturesque in the country with the Cathedral Range as a backdrop. Funds raised on the day will will go to the Victorian Institute of Sport together with Disability Sport & Recreation to assist their vital work in supporting extraordinary athletes.

The day ended with an auction which featured three unique Tasmanian experiences up for grabs including a Group Pleasure Cruise with Born Free Charters, a Premium Barnbougle Golf Package for Four and an Elite Lark Whisky Experience hosted by Bill Lark.
